About EU funds

The European Union (EU) provides funding for a range of projects and programmes in all EU countries. In Latvia, the Cohesion Policy funds - Cohesion Fund, European Social Fund Plus, European Regional Development Fund, Just Transition fund, React - EU. In addition to the Cohesion Policy funds, a new budget programme, the Recovery and Resilience Facility, was created in 2021. These funds are administered by the Ministry of Finance and the Central Finance and Contracting Agency.

Latvia also receives funding under the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development and the European Maritime and Fisheries Fund, administered by the Ministry of Agriculture and the Rural Support Service.

The EU also provides support under the Internal Security Fund, Asylum, Migration and Integration Fund, Instrument for Financial Support for Border Management and Visa Policy. These funds are administered by the Ministry of Interior and the Ministry of Culture.

The main objective of EU funding is to improve the competitiveness of Europe's regions and cities, boosting growth and creating jobs.

The agreement reached at the EU leaders' meeting in July 2020 foresees that a total of around €10.5 billion will be available for Latvia's economic development by 2029, in the form of various EU investments.
