Animation film "Before. Prison. After" tells a story of a boy named Bruno Bērziņš, nicknamed Čiriks, and his first offences, his imprisonment and his efforts to return to society with the support of specialists from the Latvian Prison Administration and the State Probation Service (SPS), as well as his family, volunteers and neighbours.
Bruno had been to prison, had spent time there, had made the most of the opportunities it offered, and had returned home to his family after serving his sentence.
When he came out of prison, Bruno had decided to start a new life. However, he received a misdemeanour for partying with "friends" in Riga Old Town. Now he has to go to the State Probation Service and try to make amends. Bruno receives a warning, but at the Probation Service, together with his case manager Karlis, they analyse what happened and what caused it. A plan of action is drawn up to ensure that "no foot slips" in the future.
Bruno is involved in the Probation programme for young people "Attention! Ready! Start!", where he will meet other young people with similar problems and volunteers who will enable him to learn skills to avoid making mistakes that can cost him his freedom.
Karlis encourages Bruno to find a new hobby and try to do something good for other people. He finds Bruno a volunteer companion. This is someone who is willing to help with everyday issues as a support person. This is how Bruno makes a new friend, a racing driver.
Since 2017, the Latvian Prison Administration, in cooperation with the State Probation Service and the State Employment Agency, has been implementing two European Social Fund projects, "For the integration of former prisoners into society and the labour market" and "Increasing the efficiency of the resocialization system", which aim to strengthen the knowledge of resocialization staff in working with prisoners and helping them prepare for life in freedom during their imprisonment.
