On April 5, 2023 during the Career Shadow day a total of 19 school students from Riga, Salaspils and Dobele schools visited the Ministry of Transport. By shadowing professionals in various fields, the young people learned about the sectoral policies, EU funding for transport and communications sector in 2021-2027, as well as development of road transport sector, aviation and rail industries and the Rail Baltica project.
The day began with a brief introduction, followed by video stories about work at the Ministry of Transport and the European Union funding for transport and communications sectors in 2021-2027. Later the shadows started the most important activity of the day – job shadowing to get acquainted with the responsibilities and content of work of professionals in their workplace.
After intensive work of shadowing, the participants of the event visit the construction site of Rail Baltica Riga Central Hub.
School students got acquainted with the progress of construction works on the southern side of the railway embankment, where Europe-wide railway tracks and a station building that meets modern requirements will be located. Rail Baltica Riga Central Hub will provide international high-speed and regional train services, as well as Rail Baltica connection to Riga Airport.
General constructor Bererix acquainted the future rail users with ongoing work on the construction site. The railway sector, including the Rail Baltica project, offers extensive and interesting job and career opportunities.
At the end of the busy day, the shadows participated in a quiz to test their knowledge obtained during the day. The test included questions about work at ministry, EU co-funded new electric trains, Rail Baltica project. The most attentive and observant ones got prizes. However, the beneficiaries were all involved: school students got deeper understanding of the transport and communications sector, while the ministry's specialists shared their knowledge and experience.
