The State Education Development Agency (VIAA) of Latvia is implementing a national ESF project ‘Career support in general and vocational education schools’ (2016-2022) to ensure accessibility of career education in pilot general and vocational education schools. New methodological materials have been developed to be used by career guidance specialists in Latvia. Pedagogues career counsellors provide career education, career information and career counselling to around 75 000 learners in 333 general and vocational schools (in 2020/2021 school year).

During the project, a variety of seminars and teacher continuing professional development courses have been organised by VIAA to provide career guidance specialists with the necessary skillset to work with groups of learners, as well as with individuals.

Moreover, VIAA has organised annual ‘Career Weeks’ during which young people plan their future occupation, meet with different professionals, visit companies and receive career counselling. VIAA has also organised annual national professional skills competition for vocational education students and ensured their participation at international level competitions – EuroSkills (in 2016 and 2018) and WorldSkills (in 2017 and 2019). In addition, a website of different professions (profesijupasaule.lv) has been sustained and supplemented to provide youth, their parents and career guidance specialists with up-to-date information about the professions required in the labour market.
