New and environmentally friendly low-floor trams are gradually appearing on the streets of Liepāja with the co-financing of European Union (EU) funds. Six new carriages are already on the streets of Liepāja, and yesterday the seventh carriage arrived from a Croatian factory. In total, 14 new-generation trams are planned for Liepāja, which will gradually replace the carriages that have been in operation for 40 years or more.
With the co-financing of European Union funds, new and environmentally friendly low-floor trams are gradually appearing on the streets of Liepāja. Six new low wagons are already running on the streets of Liepāja, but yesterday the seventh tram arrived from the Croatian factory. In total, 14 new generation trams are planned for Liepāja, they will gradually replace the wagons which have operated for 40 years.
The purpose of the project is to promote the use of environmentally friendly public transport and increase the number of passengers in environmentally friendly public transport in Liepāja. It is a continuation of the tram track reconstruction works started in the planning period 2007-2013 to ensure high quality, comfortable and safe passenger transport in the city of Liepāja.
The project improves the accessibility of public transport for all social groups. The reconstruction of the 600 m tram line improves the technical condition of the track, reducing infrastructure maintenance costs and making tram movement smoother, safer and faster.
The new trams are not only suitable for people with disabilities, but also have air conditioning, monitors, audio systems and better sound insulation.
Cohesion Fund funding — EUR 12.74 million.
