“MÁDARA” creates high value products, thanks to investment in research and technology

Ministry of Finance

With the support of EU funds, MÁDARA Cosmetics has developed products with high added value.

"MÁDARA Cosmetics wisely and purposefully uses support from European Union Structural Funds in development of production of high-value products. Considering the field of activity – the cosmetics field, which is very dynamic worldwide – and a significant strength of our country, namely the high level of competence of its scientists, the support provided by the Funds has allowed the company to reach ambitious and measurable objectives," expresses Uldis Iltners, Managing Director and Founder of MADARA Cosmetics.

Production lines installed under the project have brought about big technological advances at MÁDARA’s factory, enabling the firm to optimize use of human and material resources and cut costs. This is vital for improving competitiveness and maintaining production growth.

Thanks to the new equipment, MÁDARA is now able to manufacture new and existing products in a way that reduces their environmental impact and makes them more effective and pleasant to use. The company has also enhanced the quality and attractiveness of its packaging.

Natural cosmetics and locally developed formulas

MÁDARA products contain only natural ingredients, including extracts, oils, waxes, aromas, pigments and preservatives derived from plants, blossoms and herbs found in Northern meadows and forests. No harmful substances, such as petroleum products, parabens, synthetic preservatives or fragrances are used.

Combinations of active ingredients are developed locally to ensure the effectiveness of the products. The range includes a facial-care line comprising cleansers, toners and creams, and a body-care line, hair-care line as well as baby-care line. Product packaging and printed materials are all environmentally friendly.

In addition, MADARA Cosmetics develops formulas for other brands within private labelling and contract manufacturing projects.

All members of the MÁDARA team – including chemists, dermatologists, and marketing and design specialists – are experts in their field. The company currently exports to some 25 countries and is continually entering new markets, having become a globally recognized Latvian brand with products that are competitive worldwide.

Testing anti-ageing products

One such example is the Time Miracle anti-ageing line which uses birch sap rather than water as a carrier of essential oils, along with seven Nordic plants that renew skin cells. Thanks to EU funding, it has undergone in vitro and in vivo testing – a rarity for organic cosmetics – carried out in cooperation with a working group of dermatologists and scientists from the Faculty of Biology at the University of Latvia.

Time Miracle products have been recognized at national and international levels, winning awards and commendations at the Cosmopolitan and Natural Health beauty awards and Latvia’s Export and Innovation awards.

Development of the SOS Hydration 3 line of skin-care products, launched in 2016, was also supported with detailed studies by dermatologists which identified new trends in skin moisture levels. This line has already become one of the most sought after among MÁDARA customers and received the ‘Annabelle Prix de Beauté 2017’ award in Switzerland.

As a legacy of the EU support, the working group of scientists and dermatologists continues to research cosmetic products in a field which is becoming ever-more challenging due to a global rise in allergies and sensitive skin.

Total investment and EU funding

Total investment for the project “The investments for production of high value-added products of the company LLC ‘MÁDARA -Cosmetics’” is EUR 996 942, with the EU’s European Regional Development Fund contributing EUR 355 690 through the “Entrepreneurship and Innovation” Operational Programme for the 2007-2013 programming period.
