Renovation and reconstruction of the Great Guild Concert Hall

Ministry of Culture

Long-awaited changes will take place here through the investment of the European Regional Development Fund obtained by the Ministry of Culture.

In several years, we will see not only the restored cultural heritage site, but also modernised and improved indoor spaces, which will be much more comfortable to use for both the musicians and audiences who will come to the concerts.

The Great Guild Hall is one of the five projects that will be restored in the programme implemented by the Ministry of Culture with funding from the European Union, the focus of which is the arrangement of the public outdoor space of Old Riga and the restoration of important European cultural heritage.

Indra Lūkina, member of the Board of Latvian National Symphony orchestra: “On behalf of the orchestra, I can say that we are very, very happy that the renovation of this historic, beautiful building is starting. We have been waiting for it for many years. And we're excited about how the renovation project is going, we've seen it, and we're expecting very good results. We hope to see the biggest changes in the Great Hall, both in the audience and stage areas. And since very professional acousticians are involved in the development of the project, we hope to enjoy even more possibilities of this hall when coming to concerts after the renovation.

At the end of the last century, when the current hall and acoustics were built, times were different, so the hall's acoustics and also the hall's architectural features were highly valued. But time has moved on, and now we have other requirements; a lot of things need to be changed because they have come to the end of their life. So, in general, we expect that the hall will give us new opportunities and enable us to reopen in a completely new light.”
