On Thursday, July 4, the ceremonial opening of the renovated historic 3 rd and 4 th Corps of Riga Centre for psychiatry and Narcology (RPNC) on steam Tvaika 2 took place.
The rebuilt building 3 houses a division of dual diagnoses, including eating disorders. Often, patients brought with NMPD are not just psychiatric or narcotic patients - “dual diagnoses” or comorbidities characterize the use or addiction of addicts harmful to health and the concomitant existence of psychiatric diseases. These dual illnesses are more severe and often have a chronic pace, associated with reduced quality of life, unemployment, deteriorating interpersonal relationships, and an increased risk of suicide and decreased survival. Conversely, the increase in adolescent eating disorders has not been reported once by the children's clinical University hospital (BKUS) - in 2021, the total number of first diagnosed eating disorders at children's hospital, which include anorexia, bulimia, compulsive overeating and selective eating, was 104, of which anorexia was diagnosed in 75 patients. in the first nine months of 2023, the number of new anorexia cases alone has been 182! Now, adolescents from the age of 16 will be able to seek help in connection with eating disorders also at the Riga Centre for Psychiatry and Narcology.
However, in Building 4, treatment of addiction patients has been implemented, including long-term pharmacotherapy program with methadone and Minnesota motivation program. A patient information Centre has also been established - it is a support, communication and training centre for patients and their loved ones for resocialisation, which includes social, psychological, educational, communication and employment needs, with opportunities to create exhibitions of patient work, there will also be a small library and reading room for patients.
Patients in the new rooms in Corps 4 will begin staying from next week, while in Corps 3, about a month later, when all furnishings will be completed.
The total renovated space area of the two buildings is 1950.5 m2. (housing 3 - 975.9 m2 and housing 4 - 974.6 m2) The conversion of the historic 3 rd and 4 th corps has been implemented within the framework of Project No. 9.3.2.0/21/I/002 “Development of healthcare infrastructure” of the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and disbursed EUR 8.3 million, or EUR 8 354 100, including VAT, of which 85% or EUR 7 100 985 is ERDF financing, 9% or EUR 751 869 is State budget financing and 6% or EUR 501 246 is financing of the Riga Centre for Psychiatry and Drugs.
