Cohesion Fund to provide €2 million for the development of separate waste collection systems

Ministry of Smart Administration and Regional Development

On 10 September 2024, the Cabinet of Ministers approved the draft Regulation of the Ministry of Smart Administration and Regional Development on investments of the European Union funds for the development of the separate waste collection system by investing in the establishment of stationary infrastructure for separate waste collection, as well as by implementing public education and environmental awareness-raising measures.

The total funding available for the second round of the selection procedure is at least EUR 3.6 million, including EUR 2 million from the Cohesion Fund and at least EUR 1.6 million in co-financing. Municipalities, their capital companies and institutions can apply for funding.

Investments are earmarked for the development of waste separation infrastructure, such as the construction of separate collection points for municipal waste, underground, semi-subterranean and smart containers for separate waste collection, as well as for the construction of sorted waste collection sites. Measures to ensure communication and visual identity requirements, public information and education are also supported.

By investing in the development of a separate waste collection system, the projects aim to create an overall infrastructure to collect at least 4 750 tonnes of waste annually in a separate way.

The selection and monitoring of project applications will be carried out by the Central Financial and Contracts Agency (CFCA). Please keep up-to-date with the latest information on project selection on the CFLA website: https://www.cfla.gov.lv/lv/2021-2027-projektu-atlases
