Employees of the State Fire and Rescue Service participate in the European Union Civil Protection Advisory Mission in Ukraine

Ministry of the Interior

From March 5 till March 23, 2024, two employees of the State Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) participate in the European Union Civil Protection Advisory Mission in Ukraine. During this mission, the capacity of the Ukrainian Emergency Service to respond to chemical, biological, radiation and nuclear material (CBRN) hazards to accidents is being evaluated. Ukrainian colleagues receive information and experience in setting up shelters at national level.

A total of 21 experts in the field of CBRN were nominated by the Member States of the European Union Civil Protection Mechanism out of ten different countries, two of whom are representatives of the SFRS. As part of the advisory mission, 9 experts carry out reviews and investigations of various laws and regulations, as well as gathering information, while 12 experts have travelled to eastern and western parts of Ukraine to survey Ukrainian units specialized in CBRN in four regions within ten days.

All expert observations will be summarized in an evaluation report which will include recommendations for improving the response capacity of the Ukrainian Emergency Service in the event of CBRN accidents.

The experience acquired by employees of the SFRS will be used in order to allow the necessary changes to Latvian legislation in the field of establishment of shelters.
