On November 29, 2024, experts from the Latvian Contact Point of the European Migration Network (EMN) participated in the first Democracy Festival in Preiļi, organized by the European Commission, which was attended by over 200 young people and educators. Within the framework of the festival, EMN experts provided a significant overview of the relationship between migration and human rights, emphasizing their importance in both the Latvian and European Union contexts.
During the festival, young people were able to participate in the interactive game "Destination - Europe", which allowed them to gain insights into the migration process and understand how different decisions and circumstances can affect migrants' lives.
In the game "Destination - Europe" each player could take on the role of various decision-makers and observe how each step affects migrants and society as a whole. During the game, it was possible to try out various roles at the European Union, national, and local government levels, thereby exploring migration scenarios. The game's level 3, "Migrants in Your City" offered participants an experience that revealed the challenges faced by migrants when entering new regions and seeking a new life. This interactive experience helped participants understand the situation of migrants and fostered empathy, as well as an understanding of human rights protection.
This event was a great opportunity for young people to gain practical knowledge about human rights, migration, and their significance in society, as well as to develop an understanding of how we can all help create a safe and just environment for all people, regardless of their origin or status.
Together with the European Union, we are building a stronger and safer Latvia in Europe!
