Progress of the EU co-funded project

Progress of the EU co-funded project "Automated Border Surveillance Infrastructure" in Q1 2025

Ministry of the Interior

Within the project framework, in the first quarter of 2025, despite winter challenges and changing weather conditions, the construction works of the border technological infrastructure proceeded according to plan.

Phase 1 of technological infrastructure design and construction - out of 11 sites, active construction works are ongoing at six sites, covering an approximately 58 km long section of the state border. Excavation of the main route and installation of communications continued, as well as cable mounting in the installed protective pipes. Construction of utility connections at footbridges, installation of video surveillance poles, section installation, and construction of screw pile foundations were carried out.

Phase 2 of technological infrastructure design and construction - currently, design works and the coordination of developed construction projects are actively underway. Construction is planned to commence in the second quarter of 2025.

The State Provision Agency, in cooperation with the State Border Guard, worked intensively on the development of technical specifications for the renovation of communication and surveillance towers, based on the technical inspection of the towers conducted in 2024. This process involved defining detailed requirements and developing technical solutions.

The project implementation will significantly improve the efficiency of border security, expand technological capabilities, and facilitate operational response mechanisms and capacities.

The project is implemented by the State Border Guard in cooperation with SJSC Latvian State Radio and Television Centre and the State Provision Agency within the framework of the Financial Instrument for Border Management and Visa Policy, the managing authority of which in Latvia is the Ministry of the Interior.

The project is co-financed by the European Union.
