Progress of the EU co-funded project

Progress of the EU co-funded project "Automated border surveillance infrastructure" in Q4 2024

Ministry of the Interior

Concluding year 2024, the State Border Guard informs about the implementation progress of the “Automated border surveillance infrastructure” project (currently the most significant project within the State Border Guard) in the 4th quarter of 2024 (1 October – 31 December). This project is a crucial step towards more effective border control and security.

Phase 1 of technological infrastructure design and construction:

VAS "Latvijas Valsts radio un televīzijas centrs" (Latvian State Radio and Television Centre) has successfully concluded significant contracts with SIA "WOLTEC" to equip the state border with modern technological infrastructure along a 113 km stretch. Design works are in full swing – some construction projects have already been developed and approved, while others are awaiting necessary approvals. Construction works have also commenced in two sections to make our borders safer and technologically more advanced.

Phase 2 of technological infrastructure design and construction:

On 1 August 2024, another significant contract was concluded between VAS "Latvijas Valsts radio un televīzijas centrs" (Latvian State Radio and Television Centre) and SIA "WOLTEC", this time for the design, construction, and author's supervision of technological infrastructure for a 60 km border section. Currently, design works are progressing at full capacity along the entire length of the state border, which allows us to expect even more impressive results in the near future.

Activities of the State Provision Agency:

The State Provision Agency has also completed an important task – the execution of a contract with SIA “JP Būvinženieru birojs” (JP Construction Engineers Bureau) for the technical inspection of observation and communication towers within the framework of project No. VRS/RPVP/2023/3. These works are essential to ensure the safety and efficiency of the infrastructure.

Public information and large-format stands:

To ensure public awareness and promote project visibility, works on installing large-format information stands were successfully completed in November 2024. In addition to the existing stands at the State Border Guard's Daugavpils Board's Šķaune, Robežnieki, Piedruja, Kaplava, and Silene border guard units, five stands were also installed at the Burtnieki, Robeždaugava, Apoļinovščina, Ceplīši, and Ikaženci observation towers. These stands have become an important communication tool, providing the public with clear and easily accessible information about the project's objectives, funding, and implementation timelines.

The project is implemented by the State Border Guard in cooperation with the state joint-stock company "Latvijas Valsts radio un televīzijas centrs” and the State Provision Agency within the framework of the Financial Instrument for Border Management and Visa Policy, the managing institution of which in Latvia is the Ministry of the Interior.

The project is co-financed by the European Union.
