Supported by the EU, a modern cell broadcast system will be launched this year, enhancing the safety of Latvia's population

Ministry of the Interior

Latvia is taking a significant step towards the prompt notification of its residents in crisis situations – natural disasters, military threats, and other emergencies. Soon, this year, the long-awaited early warning or cell broadcast system will become operational in the country, ensuring the rapid and targeted delivery of messages directly to affected regions.

Minister of Interior Rihards Kozlovskis has previously expressed a strong commitment to implementing this vital system, and despite initial challenges in the procurement process, the project has now successfully reached the final stage. The contract with the winning bidder "Meditec" has been signed, and primary tests are actively underway, to be followed by further checks in April. Soon, the residents of Latvia will be able to feel safer, knowing that an efficient emergency warning system will be in place in case of a crisis.

Cell broadcast offers significant advantages over traditional SMS messaging – it ensures much faster message delivery and allows for the precise targeting of people located in the specific area under threat.

It's excellent that this system will be accessible to every resident, as warnings will be received by mobile phones of all network generations. Furthermore, users will not need to install any additional applications.

The total budget for this important project is 3.2 million euros, with a substantial portion – 2.7 million euros – provided by the European Regional Development Fund, demonstrating the European Union's support for the safety of Latvia's residents. National funding constitutes the remaining 500,000 euros.

It should be emphasized that existing notification methods, such as sirens, will also continue to be used, complementing the new cell broadcast system and creating a comprehensive and effective warning mechanism. With the implementation of this system, Latvia is taking an important step to ensure the safety and responsiveness of its residents in various crisis situations.
