On January 21 and 22, 2025, a training cycle "The Role of Expertise in the Investigation of Serious and Especially Serious Crimes" took place at the Investigators' Training Center of the State Police College. It was implemented thanks to the European Union's Internal Security Fund co-financed project "Strengthening the State Police's Response Mobility and Counter-Terrorism Capabilities by Establishing a Practical Training Center."
"Nowadays, it is difficult to imagine the detection of a criminal offense without the opportunities provided by forensics, therefore I am convinced that the knowledge gained and the practical tasks completed during the seminar will enhance the professionalism of experts," said Zane Pumpure, Deputy Director of the State Police College, at the opening of the training cycle.
During the two-day training cycle, experts from Latvia and Switzerland shared knowledge and practical experience on processes and their impact on the preservation and fixation of physical evidence, as well as changes in research methods. On the first day of the training cycle, attention was focused on the use of microparticles (fibers, varnishes, paints, glass, etc. materials) to prove contact in criminal investigations, the application of the Bayesian approach in forensics, as well as the importance of corpse examination in determining quality expertise. On the second day, training participants learned about the latest trends and updates in conducting expertise for the detection of serious and especially serious crimes, and participated in practical training on crime scene examination.
