The Last of Eight Big EU Funding Projects of Latvia Is Approved

On Wednesday, December 12th, the European Commission (EC) has approved the last of Latvia’s eight big projects “Development of water management in Riga, 4th round” that is co-financed by the Cohesion fund. The project will be implemented by Rīgas ūdens Ltd. (SIA „Rīgas ūdens”). Total eligible costs constitute 27,7 million lats, from them 14,5 million lats is the financing of the Cohesion fund.

Within the project the water management system of Riga city, which serves to 700 thousand inhabitants, will be improved constructing a new drinking water production station in Baltezers and expanding a water supply and sewage system in Marupe, Katlakalns and Borderaya. According to the project, the total planned lengths of water-supply systems for construction is 39,7 km, the lengths of water-supply systems for reconstruction – 0,5 km; the lengths of sewage systems for construction – 50,4 km, the lengths of sewage systems for reconstruction – 0,4 km; the lengths of sewage pressure pipes for construction – 3,7 km. Similarly eight new stations of sewage pumps should be constructed.

Broadened availability of services providing the collection of water supply and waste waters will give an opportunity to 4200 inhabitants in Borderaya, Katlakalns and Marupe to use centralized water supply services and approximately to 6000 inhabitants - to connect to a centralized sewage system. During the implementation of the project overall environmental conditions will be improved what will positively affect the quality of life of population and facilitate business. It is planned to complete the project until the end of 2014.

As a result of the project, drinking water provided by a centralised water supply system will completely meet the quality requirements of Council Directive 98/83/EC. The number of population connected to the centralised water supply system will increase from 96,7% to 98,2% and number of inhabitants connected to the centralized sewage system will increase from 95,6% to 97,9%.

Latvia has submitted the big project “Development of water management in Riga, 4th round” to EC on June 26th this year.
