On Thursday, March 20, in Cēsis, the renovated Cēsis State Gymnasium was officially opened, offering a modern, safe, and inspiring learning environment for students and teachers after extensive reconstruction work. The reconstruction of Cēsis State Gymnasium was carried out with the support of European Union funds administered by the Ministry of Education and Science.
The historic building of the gymnasium has been given new life, combining architectural heritage with modern solutions. In addition, the school now has new premises, upgraded infrastructure, and an improved learning environment that meets the demands of contemporary education.
During the reconstruction, a new annex was built, housing a library and a reading room. Its roof features a green area that not only improves the building’s energy efficiency but also harmoniously blends into the cityscape. The surrounding school territory has also been landscaped. In the renovated basement level, four new physics classrooms have been created — two traditional classrooms and two spaces designed for practical lessons.
To ensure accessibility for all students and teachers, a new, modern elevator has been installed in the building. Classrooms are equipped with acoustic panels that enhance sound insulation, and energy-efficient lighting, creating a pleasant and ergonomic environment. On the second floor, a multifunctional center has been established, with a sliding partition wall that allows the space to be adapted into either one large or two smaller learning areas.
As part of the project, the building’s engineering communication systems have been significantly improved — including upgrades to heating, ventilation, electricity supply, and modernization of the computer network infrastructure. Classrooms are furnished with modern technologies that promote an interactive learning process, as well as new, ergonomic furniture.
The official opening ceremony was attended by representatives of the Cēsis Municipality, the Ministry of Education and Science, the school staff, students, and alumni. In her address to those present, Deputy Executive Director of Cēsis Municipality Baiba Eglīte emphasized: “We believe that this school will be a place where new ideas are born, where talents are nurtured, and where future leaders are formed. May this environment inspire learning, growth, and reaching ever new heights.”
Encouraging words were also shared by the Director of Cēsis State Gymnasium, Ina Gaiķe: “This reconstruction marks the beginning of a new era in the development of the gymnasium, offering students a modern and creative environment for personal growth and the pursuit of educational excellence!”
The project has been implemented with the co-financing of the European Union funds and the municipality. The reconstruction of the school is part of a broader Cēsis Municipality educational infrastructure development plan, which will continue in the future, strengthening access to quality education throughout the region.
The total construction cost amounts to EUR 3,384,326.48 (excluding VAT).
