Ministry of the Interior

On 10-11 October 2024, the Council of the European Union Justice and Home Affairs Ministers met in Luxembourg to discuss the security of external borders and improving the European Union's return policy.

Latvia was represented by State Secretary of the Ministry of the Interior, Dimitrijs Trofimovs, who emphasized that Russia's aggression against Ukraine and the instrumentalization of migrants from Russia and Belarus pose significant threats.

At the meeting, ministers agreed on further measures to strengthen border resilience and improve return policy. The state of the Schengen Area and the security of the European Union in the face of external conflicts were also discussed.

Thanks to the European Union co-financing under the Internal Security Fund, the Fund for Asylum, Migration and Integration, and the Instrument for Financial Support for Border Management and Visa Policy, Latvia is purposefully implementing a number of ambitious projects to strengthen the internal security of Latvia and the entire EU. These projects include the improvement of technical infrastructure, human resources training, cooperation with international organizations, and other strategically important activities.
