Ministry of the Interior

On November 1, 2024, a detailed progress report on the development of the Latvia-Belarus and Latvia-Russia border infrastructure was presented at the meeting of the External Border Infrastructure Development Supervisory Committee. These strategically important initiatives are being implemented through the successful combination of national and European Union funding, with the aim of strengthening national security and ensuring effective border management.

Border fence construction on the Latvia-Belarus border has been fully completed (~145 km), but the construction of necessary infrastructure, such as patrol tracks, footbridges, and other solutions required for border protection, will continue until the end of 2024, both in the first and second phases along the entire 173-kilometer border.

Construction of six metal communication towers, access roads, and a 16.7 km long patrol track continues in the section of the Latvia-Belarus border near the Daugava River. This is essential for improving communication and access to hard-to-reach border areas.

Active construction work also continues on the Latvia-Russia border. Construction of a border guard fence with a total length of 178.85 km has begun this year. The construction of the fence on the Latvia-Russia border is primarily planned to be completed by the end of 2024.

Since April, soldiers from the National Armed Forces (NBS) and the Latvian National Guard have been assisting with the construction of the border fence. This synergy between state institutions and the armed forces is a significant contribution to strengthening Latvia's security.

Meanwhile, Latvia State Radio and Television Center informed in the meeting about the construction of smart infrastructure on the external land border. This project, co-financed by the European Union, will allow for the introduction of modern technological solutions for border surveillance, thus further improving its security.

We are building a safer future! Thanks to the synergy of national and European Union funding, Latvia's external border is becoming even more secure, protecting our country and its people.
