EUR 34.8 million ERDF funding will be available for the construction and rehabilitation of infrastructure in flood risk areas of national importance

Ministry of Environmental Protection and Regional Development

On 30 April 2024 the Cabinet of Ministers approved the Regulations project elaborated by the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Regional Development on construction and rehabilitation of infrastructure in flood risk areas of national importance to prevent flood risk, reduce flooding and coastal erosion.

’’This is a proven and necessary program, which in the second round will provide funding for municipal infrastructure that will protect more than 16 000 people and their property from flooding in areas where it is most needed," says Inga Bērziņa, Minister of Environmental Protection and Regional Development.

The total planned funding for the second selection round is around EUR 41 million, including EUR 34.8 million from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and at least EUR 6.1 million from local authorities.

A project to tackle flood risks in Jēkabpils is already being implemented under the first selection round of this measure.

Investments are earmarked for pre-defined municipalities for the construction or rehabilitation of various flood defences, including "green" and "blue" infrastructure such as filtration fields, wetlands, rainwater harvesting ponds.

The second round of projects under the measure will create or reinforce at least 8 km of coastline, rivers and lakes, create 52 hectares of green or blue infrastructure, and benefit at least 16 000 people through flood protection measures.

The projects are planned to be implemented in Ādaži, Dienvidkurzeme, Jēkabpils, Ogre and Valmiera municipalities, as well as in Daugavpils, Jelgava, Jūrmala, Liepāja, Rīga and Ventspils, as decided by the Cabinet of Ministers earlier.

The Central Financial and Contracts Agency, as the cooperation body for the European Union funds, will invite the above-mentioned municipalities to submit projects from June this year.
