Clarification of financing under the Recovery Fund for measures to enhance green public transport in Riga

Ministry of Transport

On August 22, the government approved the clarifications made by the Ministry of Transport (MoT) about the planned investments under the Recovery Fund to implement environmentally friendly improvements to the public transport system in Riga. The clarifications provide for reallocation of funding within the planned measures.

The previously planned funding for the measures under the Recovery Fund amounts to EUR 24.27 million. "Rīgas satiksme" will be the implementing body.

It is planned to purchase 17 electric buses for EUR 11.05 million and to build seven charging stations for EUR 3.22 million. In addition, EUR 10 million will be invested in the construction of the transport interchange point, extension of tram and trolleybus lines near Skirotava station.

The purpose of Recovery Fund investments is to implement environmentally friendly measures in Riga public transport system, which will simultaneously improve the availability of public transport, the level of passenger comfort and safety for all population groups.

The implementation of environmentally- friendly improvements to the public transport system in Riga is one of the measures within the “greening” reform of the transportation system of Riga metropolitan area implemented by the MoT. The total investment under the Recovery Fund is planned to amount to EUR 295 million. The reform is expected to contribute to the daily commuting habits of population, encouraging citizens to shift from private transport to public, which in turn will contribute positively to the achievement of European Green Deal.
