"Sustainable mobility stop" at the youth festival "Kopums"

Ministry of Transport

On August 12, the youth festival "Kopums" was held in Bauska, in which the Ministry of Transport (MoT) participated with the activity program "Sustainable mobility stop". The program provided for the young people to engage in various activities that promoted awareness of safe micromobility, as well as to learn more about the European Union (EU) projects implemented and planned to promote sustainable mobility.

The purpose of participating in the festival was to promote the awareness of young people about sustainable mobility, which, first of all, is safe movement and the responsibility of every road user. Also, the goal was to introduce young people to measures financed by EU funds - already implemented and still planned - for the promotion of citizens' mobility, including micro-mobility.

As part of the "Sustainable mobility stop" program, festival visitors had the opportunity to engage in various educational and entertaining activities, which were organized with the aim of promoting awareness of safe daily movement in the city. By participating in quizzes, young people could test their knowledge of the rules for driving with micromobility devices. The most erudite and knowledgeable quiz participants received useful presents. The opportunity to take a photo at the Sustainable mobility stop and publish the photos on one's social media accounts was especially popular.

The activity of the Road Traffic Safety Directorate, which offered the opportunity to try glasses simulating alcohol intoxication, also received a wide response. The interest in this activity was so great that there was even a queue, because it is a good way to safely test the harmful effects of alcohol on human coordination and concentration abilities.

During the event, the visitors of the “Sustainable mobility stop” had the possibility to express their views on the motivation to use public transport more frequently. The results show that the environment is an important aspect for young people, however convenient routes and possibility to switch from one public transport route /type to another, as well as comfortable public vehicles are important as well.

This festival confirmed that there are active young people all over Latvia who are interested to participate and get involved in various activities thus inspiring each other.

The Ministry of Transport participated in the festival with the co-financing from the Technical Support (EU Funds) to the Ministry of Transport.
