Minister of Transport Jānis Vitenbergs: the development plan for the transport and communications sectors should be based on cooperation and serve the interests of citizens

Ministry of Transport

On January 11, Minister of Transport Jānis Vitenbergs met with industry representatives and social partners to discuss the draft government action plan developed by the Ministry of Transport. The participants of the meeting presented their proposals for the successful development of the sector and agreed that constructive cooperation of all involved parties is necessary.

"The measures included in the Government Action Plan for the transport sector should serve as a platform for the development for the next four years. It is important for me that the ministry and the sectors work together. Our goal is to create environmentally friendly, modern, convenient and affordable public transport for citizens, strengthening the railway as the backbone of public transport. It is equally important to improve the quality of regional and local roads, as well as to develop a safe micro-mobility infrastructure," emphasizes Jānis Vitenbergs.

Vitenbergs remarked that in the current geopolitical situation, we need to implement projects that ensure connectivity with the Trans-European Transport Network. At the same time, it is a prerequisite for both security and the country's economic development. He also emphasized that work should be continued to ensure the availability of high-quality Internet throughout the country and to strengthen security in the field of electronic communications.

He emphasized that in a situation where the financial resources for the development of the sector are limited, the ministry and the industries should agree on the priority directions. "In addition to the state budget, the available funding from the European Union (EU) funds will promote the sustainable development of the sectors. The Ministry of Transport has prepared a plan of measures to ensure that the EU funds contribute to the achievement of the set goals," notes the minister.

The management of the Ministry of Transport and social partners from the sectors participated in the discussion on the draft government action plan: the Latvian Passenger Carriers Association, the Latvian Road Builder, the Latvian Aviation Association, the Latvian Information and Communications Technology Association, the Latvian Trade Union of Public Services and Transport Workers, the Latvian Association of Local and Regional Governments, the Latvian Stevedoring Company Association and Latvian Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
