Thanks to the EU funding, a project is launched on the purchase of vehicles and technical equipment for the State Border Guard

An integral element for the detection of illegal border crossings and the detention of infringing persons is a rapid response, which requires appropriate transport for the arrival of border guards at the site, which has been also recognized by the European Union, granting Latvia financing for the purchase of fast-responding vehicles within the  Border Management and Visa Instrument (2021-2027 period).

Within the project "Improvement of the mobility of the “State Border Guard”", the State Border Guard will have the possibility to purchase vehicles and other technical equipment for the purpose of guarding the border of Latvia - Belarus. Through the project, the State Border Guard will strengthen its capacity to organize flexible response measures and a progressive approach to integrated border management, in line with the requirements of the European Union, ensure preventive measures and surveillance, control illegal migration, ensure the execution of tactical operations, improve the patrolling capabilities, including the management and maintenance of the perimeter of borders by purchasing tractors and border purification of bands. In addition, the monitoring of the border river Daugava is important, where the project provides for the purchase of a boat to prevent smuggling and combat attempted illegal migration.

The project will contribute to the implementation of the EU Security Strategy and will protect fundamental  rights and European values.

The total cost of the project is EUR 14 340 283 (EUR 10 755 212 from the EU funding and EUR 3 585 071 from the state budget).
