Thanks to funding from the European Neighborhood Instrument, a Finnish expert in the field of cynology shares his experience with cynologists from Latvia and Lithuania

Ministry of the Interior

From September 18 to September 22, 2023, the State Border Guard College held a training seminar for cynologists called “Feet chasing,” led by expert from Finland Mr. Tero Väänänen.

Cynologists from the State Border Guard College, the territorial administrations of the State border Guard, the State Police and State Police College, as well as colleagues from Lithuanian law enforcement authorities participated in the seminar.

The theoretical part of the seminar examined a number of subjects needed for feet-chasing training, namely different standards for feet-chasing and their impact on training methods, a natural way of feet-chasing for dogs, and the use of food, objects and individuals for feet-chasing training. At the end of the theoretical part of the seminar, a practical part followed, during which cynologists tried various methods and exercises that are recommended to be included in the training process to achieve the desired outcome.

The seminar has been organized within the framework of project ENI-LLB-2-269 “Strengthening the capacity of border protection institutions in the field of combating cross-border smuggling and illegal immigration by developing cynology services” with the aim of increasing the level of education of officials in the field of professional cynology and developing cooperation between Latvian and Lithuanian border protection institutions in the field of cynology services.

The project is being implemented under the European Neighbourhood Instrument and funded by the European Union.
