The State Border Guard has started implementation of the project co-financed by the European Union “Acquisition of accommodation and maintenance means for the needs of the State Border Guard”. The direct objective of the project is to improve the technical possibilities and tactics of border surveillance of the State Border Guard for combating illegal migration and smuggling, as well as to increase control and response capabilities in order to improve and strengthen security of the border between Latvia and Belarus. The State border Guard is the main state institution responsible for border management and eligible institutions on the border between Latvia and Belarus. Thus, its ability to respond to illegal activities and provocations at the border is one of Latvia's priorities. Given the political situation of the moment, immediate prevention of foreign provocations and intensification of general capabilities is important – for carrying out inspections and surveillance, prevention and detection of cross-border crime on Latvia's external border with Belarus.
The implementation of the project “Purchase of accommodation and maintenance for the needs of the State border Guard” VRS/RPVP/2023/4 will contribute to increasing the monitoring capacity of the state border, reducing the number of possible illegal immigrants, moving undeclared goods across the state border and optimizing the use of personnel and technical resources. Within the framework of the project, it is planned to continue to implement several joint solutions to increase the capacity of institutions and to activate co-operation. This option should improve the situation by increasing the control capacity and the prevention and detection of offences.
