To enhance border security, the government has amended the regulations to establish specific patrol zones along the Daugava River section of the external border

Ministry of the Interior

On August 30, 2024, the Cabinet of Ministers adopted amendments to the regulations to establish the location of patrol zones in a specific section along the external border near the Daugava River and to ensure the necessary conditions for the existence of the border guard system.

The adopted amendments are crucial for the development of the external land border protection infrastructure. They pertain to the construction of a patrol path along the Daugava River, as well as the development of a smart border.

A well-equipped patrol zone and border marker surveillance zone as close as possible to the state border and the Daugava River coastline will also significantly facilitate the fight against smuggling and the evacuation of people during rescue operations. The response capabilities of border guards will become significantly more operational and effective, which in turn will contribute to ensuring the country's internal security, including against hybrid threats and the illegal movement of people and goods.

Together with the European Union, we are significantly strengthening Latvia's external border by implementing projects that improve border surveillance, combat illegal migration, and organized crime.
