Two more large EU fund projects submitted to the European Commission

Two more large EU fund projects submitted to the European Commission

On Thursday, August 20, two large Cohesion Fund (CF) project applications – "Construction of Motorway E22 Section Ludza – Terehova" and "Construction of Motorway E22 Section Rīga (Tīnūži) – Koknese" – have been submitted to the European Commission (EC) for receipt of the European Union (EU) co-financing.

Within the framework of projects it is planned to construct and re-construct two motorway sections of TEN (Europe-wide transport network improving access to EU state regions and creating global transport system) with overall length exceeding 100 km.

Newly constructed sections of motorway E22 will be included in the state main motorway network and East-West Rail Corridor.

New motorways will be mostly used for transit traffic (both automobiles and trucks) in direction towards Moscow. Therefore transport costs, environment pollution and noise affecting people living along the motorway A12 will be reduced. Also the transport flow will be facilitated and traffic safety will be improved as the line which will be constructed and re-constructed in the motorway section Ludza-Terehova will not pass through a populated place and will not cross the railway.

Implementation of both projects will promote development of transport network rout E22 Ventspils-Rīga-Rēzekne-Terehova and transit between Latvian and Russian ports.

Also it is planned that launching of actual construction works within these projects will significantly improve economic activity in construction and other related sectors both at local and national level.

Total expenditure of projects is 246.9 million lats, including 37.2 million lats or 15% is planned state budget financing and 209.6 million lats – ES co-financing from the Cohesion Fund.

With these projects currently Latvia has submitted to the EC three large transport projects. Beforehand, a project on construction of second railway in section Rīga – Krustpils was submitted.

In Latvia, in the programming period 2007–2013 within the EU funds operational programme “Infrastructure and Services” it is planned to implement 11 large projects, including 7 projects in transport sector, 3 in environment sector and 1 project in energy sector.
